The deadline for registration for the post-conference study tours, 15 July 2008, has passed. We are very pleased to announce that there was great enthusiasm for Study Tours 1A and 1A/1B (Canada Centre), which will be proceeding as planned. There are still a few places left on these tours so if you are interested, please sign up as soon as possible. First come, first served!

We regret to announce that Study Tours 2 (Canada West) and 3 (Canada East) must be cancelled due to insufficient numbers of registrations.

Many thanks to all those who have expressed interest in these tours and to those who have contributed in making them possible.

>>> May 27, 2008 – Oral and Poster Presentations

Individuals who have been invited to give an oral or poster presentation must register to the General Assembly before June 8 at the latest to confirm they accept the invitation. Otherwise, an invitation will be sent to a substitute.

Nineteen (19) International Scientific Committees of ICOMOS will be meeting in Quebec on Monday, September 29, 2008. CLICK HERE for the list and venues of committee meetings.

>>> May 7, 2008 – ABSTRACT SUBMISSION: The acceptation date has been delayed. All authors will be informed by e-mail by mid-May whether their paper has been selected.

>>> April 5, 2008Fire destroys the Manège militaire de Québec

Last night, it is with great sadness that we witnessed the terrible fire that destroyed one of the most remarkable historic buildings of Quebec, its Manège militaire which opened in 1888. It was to be the venue for the closing gala banquet of our 16th General Assembly. The Organizing Committee is now looking for another large room where to hold this activity. The Chairs of our International Scientific Committes were invited to submit to the Organizing Committee, prior to April 1st, their programme of activities for the day of Monday September 29 which is fully dedicated to them. >>> March 15, 2008Call for Papers – Scientific Symposium

The Organizing Committee is proud to announce that it has received 535 responses to its Call for Papers for the Scientific Symposium. A reviewing committee has been put in place under the chairmanship of Prof. Laurier Turgeon from Laval University in Quebec. Prof. Turgeon will be seconded by Boguslaw Smygin (ICOMOS Poland), Neil Silberman (US/ICOMOS) and Andrew Hall (ICOMOS South Africa). A group of 40 ICOMOS members signed in to join them in reviewing the papers.

The Organizing Committee is proud to announce that it has received 104 responses to its Call for papers for the International Forum of Young Researchers and Professionals in Cultural Heritage. Responses came from all over the world and represent all disciplines that are involved in the preservation of our cultural heritage. A review committee has been put in place under the coordination of Ms. Celia Forget, Ph.D. from Laval University in Quebec and Scientific Coordinator for the Forum. Online registration

The celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City have been launched. These celebrations will last all year long and numerous activities have been planned to commemorate this event. Full information concerning the different activities can be consulted on the Société des fêtes du 400e's web page at http://www.monquebec2008.com. The ICOMOS 16th General Assembly will be held in the context of these celebrations.

The World Heritage Committee will be holding its 32nd Session in Quebec City from July 2nd to 10th, chaired by Dr. Christina Cameron, Head of the Canadian Research Chair on Built Heritage and Head of the Canadian Delegation to the World Heritage Committee. The Organizing Committee is now preparing the program of the 16th General Assembly and Scientific Symposium. A summarized version of thepré preliminary program can be consulted.

 

>>> October 20, 2007 – Pretoria meeting, South Africa

The preliminary program of the ICOMOS 16th General Assembly and Scientific Symposium was presented to the Chairs of the National Committees and International Scientific Committees who met in Pretoria, South Africa, from October 8-12, 2007.

The Symposium’s International Scientific Committee met and discussed the proposal for a Call for papers that was submitted by the Canadian Committee. The theme of the Symposium is : Finding the Spirit of Place. The theme is being subdivided into 4 sub-themes, as follows :

1. Re-thinking the Spirit of Place
2. The Threats to the Spirit of Place
3. Safeguarding the Spirit of Place
4. Transmitting the Spirit of Place
