The two-day forum will be divided into four workshops. The first will focus on the memory of place, the second on the threats to the spirit of place and the third on safeguarding and transmitting the spirit of place. Finally, the last workshop will enable participants to summarize their ideas on the subject during a discussion on the draft Declaration on the Spirit of Place that will be tabled for adoption at the ICOMOS General Assembly in the days following.
At the beginning of each workshop, four (4) speakers will be invited to present the theme under discussion, each from a different angle: for example, the region or country, the city, the neighbourhood and the artistic practices. These ten-minute introductions will provide the framework and launch the round table discussions.
Participants who are unable to give an oral presentation can submit their papers in the form of posters. Posters will be exhibited during both the Forum and the subsequent General Assembly and International Scientific Symposium and will therefore be viewed by all. Their content will be an integral part of the discussions and of the ensuing written and oral syntheses. A jury will be set up and the three best posters will be acknowledged.
Friendly design competition
The organizing committee would like to invite participants to enter a friendly design competition that will be held during the Forum. The competition will challenge creators to find innovative and original ways of expressing spirit of place. Information regarding this initiative will be available in the weeks to come on the Forum Web site at http://quebec2008.icomos.org. We suggest you visit the site regularly.
The working languages of the Forum are English and French and simultaneous interpretation in these two languages will be provided for oral presentations and the round table reports.
